7 Tips to Reduce Cooling Costs in Your Savannah Home

programmable thermostat

Savannah’s hot summers can be a challenge when you’re trying to reduce cooling costs. However, there are many ways to cut your A/C bill, and they don’t have to involve sweating out the heat. Try these seven tips to reduce cooling costs while still staying cool.

Thermostat Control

Turn back the thermostat when you’re out of the house. If you’re not around, or if you’re asleep, you don’t need to keep your home perfectly cool. Turning back your thermostat 10-15 degrees for periods of about eight hours can save a good chunk on your energy bill. Use a programmable thermostat to make things easier.

Humidity Control

Heat lingers more easily in humid air, and humid air makes it harder for sweat to evaporate on your skin. Your A/C will do a little dehumidification, but consider a whole-house dehumidifier for more thorough results.

Ceiling Fans

Running your ceiling fan will cool you down and help circulate conditioned air. Just remember that fans cool people, not living areas, so turn off the fan when you leave the room.

Sealing and Insulation

Seal any air leaks around your home, and insulate your walls. If cool air is escaping or hot air is infiltrating your home, that means extra work for your air conditioner. Proper sealing and insulation can reduce cooling costs.

Control Heat Gain

Use curtains, blinds, window films or awnings to shade windows from sunlight. Passive solar heat gain can raise the temperature in your home.

Limit the amount of cooking you do indoors on your range or in your oven. Use microwaves, which produce less heat, consider cold dishes or grill outdoors.

A/C Efficiency

Upgrade your A/C to a high-efficiency model, or make sure you’re current on your maintenance! A well-maintained air conditioner is more efficient than one that hasn’t been inspected recently.
